Build Your Life Around What Matters Most

Summary

Have you ever been on a trip where no one had a plan? Maybe you arrived in a new city with your group, excited to explore, but instead of diving into the sights and experiences, you spent hours debating what to do. By the time you decided, the day was half over.

Frustrating, right?

The same thing happens in life when we lack clarity. Without a clear sense of direction, we waste time and energy on things that don’t truly matter. Instead of living with purpose, we drift, reacting to whatever comes our way.

But here’s the truth: Clarity is the foundation of intentional living.

Why Clarity Matters

Without clarity, it’s nearly impossible to be intentional. When you don’t know who you are, what you value, or where you’re going, you’ll struggle to prioritize your time and energy. You might find yourself:

  • Feeling stuck or unmotivated.
  • Going through the motions without a sense of purpose.
  • Spending time on things that don’t align with your values.

On the other hand, clarity gives you focus, confidence, and momentum. It’s the compass that keeps you aligned with your goals and values, even when life gets chaotic.

Four Areas Where You Need Clarity

If you want to live with intention, start by gaining clarity in these four areas:

1. Who You Are

What are your mission, priorities, strengths, and values?
Knowing yourself is essential for living a purposeful life. Ask yourself:

  • What am I passionate about?
  • What unique gifts and talents do I bring to the table?
  • What’s truly important to me?

When you’re clear on who you are, it’s easier to align your actions with your identity and values.

2. How You Treat Others

Do you approach your relationships with intention, or do you let your mood dictate how you show up?
Take time to reflect on the kind of person you want to be in your interactions. A helpful exercise is to identify three words you’d like others to use to describe you. Maybe it’s “kind,” “encouraging,” and “thoughtful.” Once you’re clear, make a conscious effort to embody those traits in your daily life.

3. Where You’re Going

Do you have a compelling vision for your future?
Without a clear destination, it’s hard to know what steps to take today. Spend time dreaming about where you want to go in life and what mission you want to pursue. A clear vision will motivate you and give you a sense of purpose.

4. Your Plan of Action

A vision without a plan is just a wish.
Break your goals into actionable steps that you can tackle daily and weekly. Progress, no matter how small, is one of the most energizing experiences in life.

The Habit of Clarity

Clarity isn’t a one-time event—it’s a habit. The most intentional people regularly reflect, evaluate, and adjust. They:

  • Take time to reflect on the past week: What worked? What didn’t?
  • Plan for the future, identifying key actions to take.
  • Pause throughout the day to ensure their actions align with their priorities.

If you’re feeling stuck or unmotivated, take a step back and focus on clarity. Start with one of the areas above and spend some time reflecting and journaling.

Have you ever been on a vacation or a trip and your group didn’t have a clear plan for what you were going to spend your time doing? There wasn’t any clear agenda or a list of activities that you were going to do.

So what happens? You end up spending a lot of time talking about what you should do next instead of spending your time actually doing it.

This is one of the things that drives me crazy when I’m on trips. I definitely am more of the planner types, so I like to have my trips planned out pretty well before I go on them.

I’m fine being spontaneous and going with the flow, but what really drives me crazy is when you have a limited time in a new city or country and end up spending half of the time there talking about what to do next or spending hours looking up things to do in that area when you could be out doing it.

If I’m going to spend a lot of time and money going somewhere new, I like to do research ahead of time on some things to do so that the time on the vacation is actually spent doing the fun activities instead of figuring out what to do.

Having a good sense of clarity and direction I believe is an important element to the success of any vacation.

I believe the same is true in your life. If you don’t have clarity, it is extremely difficult to be highly intentional. If you don’t know things like who you are, what you want to be about, and where you are going, you will end up spending a lot of time on things that might not be important or a lot of time doing things that aren’t in alignment with who you are or where you’re going.

Just as on a trip without a plan, you can spend a lot of time thinking about what you should do in any given moment or spend a lot of time on activities that don’t truly matter to you.

One of the most important elements of intentional living is Clarity. This seems basic, but it is where intentional living must start.

The most highly intentional people that I know are very clear on who they are and where they are going. They are very clear on how they want to treat people. They are very clear on the actions they need to take to get to where they want to go.

The most happy and engaged people I know, seem to have the most clarity in their life as well.

If I have a clear long-term vision for my life that is compelling, I can wake up each day with some excitement. When I forget where I am going or don’t have a clue, it’s really hard to get up each day with purpose.

If you feel stuck right now, it might be a matter of clarity.

If you feel like you aren’t enjoying your days right now, there is a good chance it is a matter of clarity.

If you aren’t feeling challenged or aren’t growing in any way right now, you probably lack clarity on an exciting future.

If you are going through the motions in your life right now, you need more clarity on what to spend your time on that is more aligned with who you are and where you want to go.

Clarity is the beginning of intentional living.

You need to develop the habit of Clarity

Highly intentional men continuously push to get more clarity. If you aren’t investing any time in your week right now thinking about the future, reflecting on how you treated people this week, or how your attitude was, you must start giving yourself some space for reflection each week.

This needs to start to become a part of who you are. You should always be learning from your experiences. You should take time to think about the future. You should stop during the day to get clear on what you want to do next and how you want to show up.

You can always gain more clarity in your life. It should become a part of your normal routine to ask yourself good questions and get more and more clear on the important things in life.

Today, I am going to give you four different areas where you need to push to get massive clarity in your life.

The first area of clarity is, you must be really clear on who you are. What I mean by this is, you must know your mission, your priorities, your strengths, and your values.

Do you know what you are passionate about?

Do you have a clear understanding of your unique gifts, talents, and abilities?

Do you know what’s truly important to you? And most importantly, are you spending time on those things?

Do you know what you value? What is deeply important to you? What would you give your life for?

These are some great questions to ask yourself. It seems basic, but it is surprising how few men have good answers for these questions.

Clarity on who you are is associated with overall self-esteem. How positive you feel about yourself is directly related to how well you know yourself. Knowing yourself is also associated with confidence, happiness, and assertiveness.

If you don’t know what you value, how do you know what to spend your time on? If you don’t know what you are passionate about, it’s going to be really difficult to be engaged in your life on a daily basis.

But when you know who are - when you know what you value and what your mission is - and then you live in alignment with that on a daily basis, you will gain so much confidence. You will be so engaged in your life. You will feel so much energy and momentum.

If you don’t have massive clarity on who you are, this is the first place to start. Take some time this week to ask yourself some good questions and try to get crystal clear on your mission, priorities, and values.

The second area where you need massive clarity is, how you want to treat others. This is such a big one.

I want you to picture some scenarios with me real quick. Picture the last time you walked into work…did you spend any time thinking about how you wanted to treat people that day…whether it be your coworkers or customers?

The last time you walked into your house, did you stop to think about how you wanted to treat your family or your roommates when you walked in?

When you last hung out with your friends, did you think about how you wanted to treat them or what would make that time more meaningful?

If you don’t spend any time getting clear on how you want to treat people, then you will usually let your mood or circumstances dictate how you treat people.

If you have a good day at work, you will probably be more pleasant in your relationships. But if you had a bad day at work or had a bad night’s sleep, then most likely, you won’t treat people how you truly want to.

An intentional man doesn’t treat people based on mood or circumstance. An intentional man takes time to get clear on how he wants to treat people and then lives it out consistently…no matter how he feels in the moment.

One of the best ways to get clear on this is to ask yourself, what are three words that I would love people to use when they describe me? Ask yourself that question now, what are three words that I would hope people would use to describe me.

Could be something like encouraging, loving, and supportive.

Could be confident, thoughtful, and present.

Think of three words and get clear on what’s important to you when it comes to your interactions with people. Then start to live into those three words in each situation this week.

The next area of clarity would be, getting clear on where you are going

Do you have a compelling vision for your life right now? Are you clear on what you want for your future?

How do you know what to spend your time on if you don’t know where you are going? How do you know what skills you need to develop or what strengths or weaknesses you need to develop?

This one does take some time to develop, and so unfortunately, a lot of men don’t take the time to get clear on this.

For the longest time, I didn’t have a clear vision of where I wanted my life to go and so it caused me to be extremely reactive. It caused me to just go through the motions.

There is nothing that will boost your energy and motivation than a clear long-term vision of your life that is exciting to you. If you are lacking some motivation right now, spend some time connecting to a long-term vision.

Spend some time dreaming and thinking about where you want your life to go and what mission you want to pursue.

The last area of clarity that you need to develop, is you have to have clear plan of action.

After you get clear on who you are, how you want to treat others, and your long-term vision, take each one of those areas and put together an actually action plan that you can follow to make sure you sticking to those things.

A vision without a plan is just a wish.

It’s an awesome step to get clear on your long-term vision, that’s more than most people do. But it’s even more powerful when you take that vision and develop a plan that you can follow to reach that vision.

One of the most energizing things in life is when you can see that you are making progress on meaningful pursuits and meaningful goals.

The days where I feel the most alive and energized are the days where I took action on what was important to me.

The days where I feel the worst when I go to bed are the days I know that I wasted…that I didn’t take action or I wasted my time on things that didn’t matter.

The most intentional men I know have taken the time to develop a plan of action that keeps them in consistent alignment with their vision, mission, and values.

A dream without a plan is just a wish. It’s just a good intention.

Having a clear plan of action that you can follow on a daily and weekly basis will allow you to live with daily intentionality.

Ask yourself, do I know what actions I need to take this week to lead me toward my long term vision? Do I know what actions I must take this week in order to live in alignment with my priorities?

If you don’t have a good answer to those questions, you might need to spend a little more time developing a clear plan of action.

Again, Clarity is the first step of intentional living. Without clarity, you will not be able to know how to spend your time and energy.

Spend time getting clarity in four key areas

  1. Who You are
  2. How you want to treat people
  3. Where you are headed
  4. And how to get there

When you get massive clarity on those four areas, you will be able to live a much more intention life.

I hope today was encouraging and helpful for you. The commitment to clarity has made a huge difference in my life and I truly hope that it creates a massive impact in your life as well.

If this training was helpful, please share it with someone you know that could also benefit from it.
