One of the most significant challenges I’ve seen in my years of working with men across different ages and walks of life is the struggle with passivity. It’s the trap of putting your life on cruise control, of reacting to the demands of the day rather than proactively shaping your path. This problem resonates deeply with me because it was my story. That’s why I’m so passionate about helping men break free from this cycle and embrace lives of intentionality.
Passivity can take many forms, but its hallmark is a life lived on autopilot. You wake up, go through the same motions, and repeat the cycle day after day. Without intentionality, your days lack purpose, and the things that once brought you joy and meaning slowly fade into the background. Perhaps you’ve experienced this, or you know someone who has. It’s a life that can become focused on the wrong priorities—career at the expense of family, busyness at the expense of health, or routine at the expense of joy.
A story I came across recently illustrates the cost of passivity. It’s from a man named John Jerryson, who shared his regrets online in a deeply personal account. John, a 46-year-old banker, admitted to spending 26 years in a stable, predictable job, choosing safety over his dreams. In doing so, he lost touch with his passions, missed precious family moments, and neglected his health, relationships, and purpose.
John’s life was filled with excuses and procrastination, and his regrets are sobering:
His story is a powerful reminder that passivity can rob us of the things we value most, leaving us with a life filled with “what-ifs” and unrealized potential.
Hearing John’s story forced me to confront my own tendencies toward passivity. When I’m reactive, I’m not the man I want to be. I’m self-focused, distracted, and out of alignment with my values. But when I’m intentional—when I have a plan, a vision, and a supportive community—I live with purpose.
Breaking free from passivity requires:
If you’ve been living a life of passivity, now is the time for change. You have incredible potential. You were created for a purpose, and this year could be the turning point for your life.
As we step into 2025, I want to challenge you to reject passivity and pursue a life of intentionality. Let this be the year that you:
Don’t let fear, distractions, or excuses hold you back. Surround yourself with like-minded men who will encourage you to stay the course. Find the resources and support that help you live intentionally.
Your life is a story being written every day. Let 2025 be the year you take control of the pen. Make the decision today to step into the man you were created to be.
You have what it takes. Let’s make this year the one where you break free from passivity and step boldly into your purpose.
Here’s to a year of courage, boldness, and intentional living!
